Microsoft made Think Deeper OpenAI’s GPT o1 reasoning model “free and available for all users of Copilot.”
Just two weeks after increasing Microsoft 365 with Copilot by $3 per monthly as well as the release of DeepSeek R1, an open-source AI model that is competitive and free from the China-based AI company of the same name. Both o1 & R1 are ‘chain-of-thought’ models in that they produce intermediate stages of output prior to settling on a definitive answer. This is supposed help them eliminate hallucinations & errors. These intermediate stages are a form artificial reasoning used by LLMs. Mustafa Suleyman shared the news of the o1’s availability via Redmond LinkedIn. Suleyman said that there would be no additional costs beyond what you are already paying.

Suleyman may not have captured the mood of Microsoft this week with his use of Apple’s popular marketing term . Redmond’s stock dropped two percent on Monday as investors weighed the impact of DeepSeek AI models. Even the Windows giant has now quickly integrated its portfolio. Microsoft shares have fallen another six percent ($416 from $445) since Wednesday, following the IT giant’s second quarter earningsreport. The drop is attributed to lower than expected Azure revenue growth and revised financial guidance. James Crouch, UK Director at ElectroNet, responded to Suleyman’s post. He said that Suleyman’s loose definition of “free” was not unnoticed. DeepSeek is causing a stir in the tech world.
The o1 model of Microsoft-backed OpenAI is designed for complex tasks to be solved in a series steps, similar to how people solve problems.
