Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is an action RPG that is having a mixed launch thanks to a large player count but an ‘overwhelmingly negative’ review score.
Chinese developer Leenzee’s and publisher 505 Games first souls-like game, Wuchang : Fallen Feathers, released on July 24,2025, has already garnered over 131,518 players on Steam. This is more than FromSoftware’s critically-acclaimed titles Dark Souls, or The ax,
Despite its staggering debut, the game was slammed by “Overwhelmingly negative” reviews on Steam. Only 24.7% out of 27,086 reviews are positive. The negative feedback is due to severe optimization issues with Unreal Engine 5 despite promising gameplay.
Wuchang received backlash as well from Chinese players who make up a large portion of Steam users, due to a pricing issue where they were charged comparatively more. Some standard edition buyers received deluxe editions and review copies were sent to Chinese streamers earlier, creating a perception of unfair treatment. Some Chinese players have also pointed out historical inconsistencies. The game does not mention the violent rise of the Qing Dynasty led by the Manchus, but instead casts a Ming Emperor as the main antagonist. This was offensive to many Han Chinese players.
Wuchang ranked as Steam’s 14th highest-selling and 9th most-played game on launch day. The game’s system requirements are modest, requiring only a low-end Nvidia GTX1060. This is a welcome change in an era where system requirements are increasing. Lenzee, 505 Games, and other developers quickly took to Steam to address the performance issues. They also promised to fix pre-order rewards bugs and regional pricing discrepancies.
It is not uncommon for games to launch with problems these days. This was the case when CD Projekt Red released Cyberpunk 2030 which managed to mend ties with the gaming community. Wuchang : Fallen Feathers (19459037) is in the same boat, as the future of the game depends on the developer’s abilities to roll out optimization fixes.
