In short: WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that allows users to make it their default messaging and calling app on iOS devices. Apple announced last year that iOS 18.2 introduced the ability to switch between default SMS and phone applications.
This feature is available in WhatsApp’s latest update (version 25.8.74), which allows users to set up the app as the primary hub for messages and calls on iPhone.
A new default app setting appeared recently for some beta testers. It will be rolled out to more devices over the next few days and weeks. Users can access the feature under Settings> Apps and Default Apps. They can then select WhatsApp for Messaging and calling. Once you’ve made this switch, your iPhone will launch WhatsApp automatically whenever you tap on a phone number within an email or webpage. The Contacts app allows you to initiate a WhatsApp call by tapping on a phone number. The same is true for messaging – pressing the ‘Messages’ button will open WhatsApp rather than iMessage.
Customizing the default messaging and phone app on the iPhone is not a new concept. Apple introduced this flexibility for the first time with iOS 18.2 late last year. Users could replace not only messaging and calling apps, but also other built in services like web browsing, email, and password management. Apple’s apps were no longer the only option for these functions. WhatsApp’s embrace of this new openness, however, is a significant change. The app is the primary communication tool of millions around the world, especially outside of the US. There are also many practical benefits. WhatsApp’s end to end encryption is more secure than traditional SMS. Users can enjoy features such as multimedia sharing, voice messages, and international calls without paying extra fees.
For users who use WhatsApp for both professional and personal communication, making it the default app simplifies interactions by eliminating the need to switch between different chat platforms. All conversations are consolidated in one interface to make messaging more efficient and seamless.
