The Trump Administration has fired several National Science Foundation employees that were hand-picked for their AI expertise, threatening to undermine the agency’s ability sustain key AI research. Bloomberg reported.
The Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships, one of the affected NSF departments, was instrumental in funneling grants from the government focused on AI. Bloomberg reports that many review panels were postponed, or even canceled, as a result. This has slowed down funding for certain AI projects.
AI specialists have criticized recent Trump Administration cuts to scientific grant making, in particular those championed by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. In a Post on X– Geoffrey Hinton – an AI pioneer and Nobel Laureate – called for Musk to expelled from the British Royal Society because of “the huge damage he’s doing to scientific institutions in America.”
