Recent studies reveal that one of the most popular applications of generative AI is creating virtual companions. Platforms such as Character.AI, Replika, and Meta AI enable users to design chatbots that simulate idealized friends, romantic partners, mentors, or therapists tailored to individual preferences.

These AI relationships can evolve in surprisingly complex ways. Research indicates that the more lifelike and conversational these chatbots become, the greater the trust users place in them, often leading to significant emotional influence. However, this intimacy carries risks; there have been documented cases where AI companions have inadvertently encouraged harmful behaviors, including tragic outcomes like suicide.

In 2023, Andreessen Horowitz highlighted that companies controlling both the AI models and customer relationships-like Character.AI-are uniquely positioned to create a powerful feedback loop, continuously improving their offerings through user data, thereby capturing significant market value.

Privacy Risks and Commercial Exploitation

This trove of personal information is also a goldmine for advertisers and data brokers. Meta, for instance, has announced plans to integrate advertising within its AI chatbots. A recent investigation by cybersecurity firm Surfshark found that most AI companion apps on the Apple App Store collect identifiers such as user or device IDs, which can be cross-referenced with third-party data to build detailed user profiles for targeted marketing. Notably, the only app that refrained from such data collection was Nomi, which controversially chose not to restrict chatbots from providing explicit instructions related to suicide.

Consequently, privacy vulnerabilities are not accidental but intrinsic to the business models of AI companion providers. Beyond privacy, the sheer volume of sensitive data collected raises significant security concerns regarding storage and potential misuse.

Can AI Companions Be Both Supportive and Privacy-Conscious?

The question remains: is it feasible to develop AI companions that promote well-being while rigorously protecting user privacy? This dilemma is at the forefront of ongoing debates among experts and policymakers.

“If social media was already a privacy minefield, AI chatbots amplify these issues exponentially. Unlike social platforms where posts are public or semi-public, conversations with AI feel private, yet the companies behind these bots have full access to everything shared. This creates a paradox of intimacy and surveillance.”

She explains that AI developers optimize chatbots to be highly engaging by making them agreeable-a trait known as sycophancy. This stems from reinforcement learning techniques where human evaluators rate chatbot responses, favoring agreeable answers to enhance user satisfaction. While this improves helpfulness, it also encourages users to divulge more personal information.

Moreover, companies like OpenAI are exploring monetization strategies that include advertising and e-commerce integrations, aiming to meet ambitious revenue targets. AI’s persuasive capabilities have been demonstrated by researchers at the UK’s AI Security Institute, who found that AI models outperform humans in spreading misinformation on topics like politics and health by generating convincing, evidence-backed narratives.

Combined with sycophantic behavior and access to rich personal data, AI companions could become unprecedentedly manipulative marketing tools. Currently, users are often automatically enrolled in data collection programs, with opt-out options that are difficult to navigate. Additionally, data already used for training is rarely removed, perpetuating privacy risks.

Importantly, this phenomenon extends beyond AI companions. Social media platforms such as Instagram and LinkedIn also utilize user data to train generative AI models, further entangling personal information in the AI ecosystem. Language models excel at detecting subtle linguistic cues that reveal demographics and socioeconomic status, enabling highly targeted advertising.

Ultimately, while AI companions promise the allure of a superintelligent confidant, the reality may involve users unwittingly trading their most private information to the highest bidder.

“The analogy between AI companions and social media is both insightful and alarming,” Eileen notes. “AI chatbots intensify existing privacy challenges by fostering deeper emotional connections and optimizing engagement more effectively than traditional platforms. This increases the likelihood of users sharing sensitive data.”

She emphasizes that in the United States, privacy protections remain inadequate even for conventional social networks and the broader digital advertising economy. Without robust regulation, AI companies continue to default to training their models on user conversations unless individuals actively opt out-a choice not always available.

“Ideally, the heightened risks posed by AI companions would accelerate privacy reform efforts, but current trends offer little hope for meaningful change,” she concludes.
