The Rise and Fall of Nvidia’s Geopolitical Strategy

Last month, China’s Cyberspace Administration imposed restrictions preventing companies from acquiring Nvidia’s H20 chips, much to the dismay of Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang. This development came on the heels of a tumultuous series of events that transpired over the summer.

Following an intense lobbying effort throughout the year, which included a high-profile meeting between Huang and then-U.S. President Donald Trump in early 2023, Nvidia secured export licenses in August. These permits allowed the company to ship downgraded versions of its chips to China, unlocking a significant backlog of orders that had been stalled due to geopolitical tensions.
