The New York Times now allows its editorial and product teams to use AI-based tools that could one day be used to write social copy, headlines for SEO, and code. Reports Semafor.

The publication sent an email to its staff informing them of the launch of Echo, a new AI summary tool.

The New York Times shared a suite AI products with staff that they could use to develop web products or editorial ideas. They also shared editorial guidelines on how to use AI tools. The editorial staff of the paper is encouraged to use AI to help with research, brainstorm interview questions and suggest edits. Staff were warned against using AI to draft an article, significantly revise it or input confidential sources. These guidelines suggest that the Times may use AI to implement digitally spoken articles and translations in other languages. Semafor reports The Times will approve AI programs such as GitHub Copilot for coding, Google Vertex AI for product design, NotebookLM, Amazon AI products, OpenAI’s non ChatGPT API, through a business-account. The New York Times’s embrace for AI tools comes at a time when it is still involved in a lawsuit with OpenAI and Microsoft over allegedly violating the copyright law by using generative AI to train on the publisher’s material.
