Thailand becomes one of the first in Asia to get the Sora app

Thailand Embraces Sora: OpenAI’s Innovative AI Video Creation App Launches in Asia

Thailand’s vibrant creative community now has access to the Sora app, OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI-powered video generation tool, marking its debut in Asia. This launch aims to empower local storytellers by providing advanced visual content creation capabilities. Alongside Thailand, the rollout also includes Vietnam and Taiwan, expanding the app’s reach across the region.

Rapid Growth and Early Success in North America

Initially released in the United States and Canada in early September, Sora quickly gained traction, with users sharing a wide variety of AI-generated video clips. According to Bill Peebles, head of Sora, the app surpassed one million downloads within just five days-outpacing the initial adoption rate of ChatGPT despite requiring invitation codes during its early phase.

Accessible and User-Friendly Experience for Thai Creators

Thai users can freely download Sora on iOS without needing an invite, enjoying relatively generous usage limits that may be adjusted as the platform evolves. The app is powered by Sora 2, a sophisticated video generation engine capable of creating original videos, remixing existing content, and curating personalized feeds to inspire creativity. Importantly, the app supports Thai language input, making it accessible and intuitive for local users.

Innovative Features: Cameos and Character Cameos

A standout feature gaining popularity among early adopters is Cameos, which allows users to insert themselves directly into AI-generated scenes. This requires a one-time verification to authenticate identity and likeness, ensuring secure and personalized content creation. Thai influencer Woody Milintachinda praised the app, stating, “Sora enables me to transform ideas into engaging stories that resonate deeply with audiences. It offers a unique platform to connect with creators worldwide, fostering new creative expressions and collaborations.”

Building on this, the app now introduces Character Cameos, enabling users to convert virtually any object-such as pets, sketches, personal belongings, or original designs made within Sora-into reusable digital characters. After uploading a video of the character, users can set privacy preferences, choosing whether the character remains private, is shared with followers, or is accessible to the entire community. Once named, these characters can be featured in future videos, expanding creative possibilities.

Seasonal Content and Responsible Design

To celebrate the Halloween season, Sora offers a themed starter pack featuring iconic figures like Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, ghosts, witches, and Jack-O’-Lanterns, providing users with festive inspiration for their creations.

OpenAI emphasizes a responsible approach to Sora’s deployment in Thailand. The app’s feed is designed to promote active creation rather than passive consumption, focusing on content from followed accounts to encourage meaningful engagement rather than extended screen time.

Privacy, Safety, and Control Features

Users maintain full control over their likeness when using Cameos, with options to manage who can access their image and the ability to revoke permissions or remove videos featuring their likeness at any time. Videos created with a user’s cameo by others remain visible to the original user, ensuring transparency.

All videos generated within Sora carry both a visible animated watermark and an invisible C2PA digital watermark. The latter serves as a tamper-proof signature, verifying that the content was authentically created on the Sora platform and preventing unauthorized use of AI-generated clips.

Enhanced Safety Measures for Younger Users

For teenage users, Sora enforces daily limits on the number of AI-generated videos appearing in their feeds, alongside stricter Cameo usage policies. The platform incorporates robust safety mechanisms, including human moderators who review reports of bullying or inappropriate behavior. Additionally, parents can leverage ChatGPT-powered controls to customize feed restrictions, disable personalization features, and manage direct messaging settings, ensuring a safer environment for younger creators.

Expanding Horizons for AI-Driven Creativity in Asia

With its launch in Thailand and neighboring countries, Sora is poised to revolutionize how creators in Asia engage with AI technology for storytelling. By combining user-friendly tools, innovative features, and a commitment to responsible use, Sora offers a dynamic platform that nurtures creativity while safeguarding user experience.
