SEGA recently unveiled exciting previews of its forthcoming titles, New Virtua Fighter Project and Stranger Than Heaven, during the Tokyo Game Show 2025. However, the company has yet to disclose official release dates, leaving fans eagerly awaiting further announcements.
In collaboration with RGG Studio, SEGA introduced New Virtua Fighter Project through an engaging teaser video at TGS 2025. The event included an extensive 50-minute presentation highlighting the game’s smooth animation and detailed combat mechanics. Developers elaborated on the core battle rules and introduced three innovative gameplay systems designed to revitalize the iconic fighting series.
For enthusiasts seeking deeper insights, the RGG Direct Summit held a day prior to TGS offered an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into the development of Stranger Than Heaven, RGG Studio’s latest IP. This new title features a captivating 1940s noir and jazz aesthetic, setting a distinct tone for the narrative and gameplay experience.
Revamped Combat Mechanics: Standard and Uprising Rules
New Virtua Fighter Project preserves the classic fighting spirit through its Standard Rules, which honor the franchise’s original mechanics. Players secure a round victory by either defeating their opponent or achieving a ring-out, with matches decided by the first to win three rounds.
Complementing this, the game introduces the innovative Uprising Rules, incorporating fresh systems such as Flow Guard, Stunner and Stun Combo, and Break and Rush. These mechanics add strategic depth and dynamic exchanges to the combat.
Break and Rush: Targeted Damage and Vulnerability
The Break and Rush system enables players to focus attacks on specific body parts of their opponents, gradually triggering a break state. Once activated, this state leaves the adversary susceptible to powerful special moves. Notably, the effects of Break and Rush carry over into subsequent rounds, influencing match momentum.
Stunner and Stun Combo: Fluid Counterattacks
Stunner and Stun Combo mechanics facilitate seamless chaining of moves, creating realistic back-and-forth combat without relying on complex input sequences seen in other fighting games like Tekken 8’s Special Style. These systems work in tandem with Break and Rush, allowing players to parry incoming attacks and execute precise counters, enhancing tactical gameplay.
Additional Announcements and Release Outlook
Alongside the Virtua Fighter Project, the RGG Direct Summit revealed the upcoming Yakuza Kiwami 3, further expanding SEGA’s popular franchises. Meanwhile, Stranger Than Heaven’s atmospheric opening sequence was showcased, emphasizing its unique noir-jazz theme.
Although neither New Virtua Fighter Project nor Stranger Than Heaven have confirmed release dates, SEGA’s latest financial report suggests potential launches within the company’s fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. Industry speculation points to possible release windows in late 2027 or early 2028, based on the current teaser materials and development progress.
