Roblox releases an open-source model which can create 3D objects with AI

Roblox The company announced on Monday that the first version of its 3D model – dubbed “Cube” – will be released to allow creators create 3D objects with generative AI. The company has also released an open-source version that anyone can use to build on.

The company will demo Cube, which was announced at Roblox’s annual Developer Conference last year, at the Game Developers Conference. GDC) later this afternoon.

Later this week, creators will be able to access Cube and its first tool: Mesh generation.

Cube 3D mesh creation, currently in beta, allows creators to create “meshes” or 3D representations using a single command. The creators can then further customize the in-game object within Roblox Studio.

With the open source version, Cube 3D, anyone can customize, create plug ins, or train their model with their own datasets.

Roblox has also announced three new AI tools: text generation, speech-to text, and text-tospeech. These capabilities will be launched in the coming months.

This text generation tool allows developers to add text-based AI capabilities to their games. The tool allows players to have conversations with interactive NPCs.

Text to speech, on the other hand, allows developers to add narration, make NPCs talk, or include spoken subtitles in their game. Speech-to-text lets players use voice commands to direct characters, such as moving them forward. Roblox says that the company also has plans to launch mesh generation for “complex” items and scene generation. Scene generation, for example, will let creators instruct the AI to create a forest scene, and change the leaves of trees from green to fall colors, to show that the season is changing.

Roblox stated previously last year that the long-term objective is to have 3D objects and scene fully functional. This is what it calls “4D Creation.”

Nick Tornow, Vice President of Engineering at Roblox told TechCrunch, “Where the fourth dimensions is interaction between objects environments and people.”

Like any company that is exploring generative AI, Roblox believes Cube can help creators to work faster and allow indie developers take on larger projects. The company has released several AI tools including texture generation and avatar creation.

AI in gaming is a hot topic. Several companies are making advances in this area. Tencent recently launched its open-source 3D generation modelis designed to generate 3D images from text or 2D images.

But the use of AI continues raising concerns within the industry. As indicated in According to GDC’srecent report, 30% of game designers feel that generative artificial intelligence is negatively impacting the gaming space. According to a According to a CVL Economicsstudy, 13.4% of gaming-related jobs could be affected or replaced by AI in 2026.
