Prepare to see more AI on YouTube

YouTube is expanding its AI capabilities with a fresh suite of intelligent tools designed to empower content creators.

On Tuesday, YouTube unveiled new AI-driven features that simplify video editing, enable effortless creation of short clips, and introduce safeguards to protect creators’ identities from misuse by AI technologies.

As AI innovation accelerates, YouTube and its parent company, Google, are intensifying efforts to keep pace with leading AI developers such as OpenAI. Recently, Google enhanced its AI model-informally dubbed “nano-banana”-to better rival popular tools like ChatGPT’s Image Generator, which gained widespread attention for producing Studio Ghibli-inspired artwork. YouTube’s goal is to democratize video production by making AI-powered content creation accessible to everyone. Notably, AI image generation remains one of the fastest-growing applications in the AI landscape.

Introducing Veo 3: Revolutionizing YouTube Shorts

YouTube has collaborated with Google DeepMind to integrate a tailored version of Veo 3, an advanced video generation model, into YouTube Shorts-the platform’s answer to TikTok and Instagram Reels featuring short, engaging videos.

This customized iteration, named I See 3 Fast, offers users a seamless way to produce clips directly from their smartphones at no cost. It boasts quicker processing speeds, reduced latency at 480p resolution, and the ability to generate videos complete with audio.

To utilize Veo 3 and other AI functionalities, users simply tap the sparkle icon atop the YouTube app screen and select the Create option. Currently, these features are live in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans to expand availability to additional countries soon.

Looking ahead, YouTube intends to enrich Shorts with more Veo-powered capabilities, including animating still images and videos, applying diverse visual effects, and inserting objects into clips, further enhancing creative possibilities.

AI-Powered Video Editing: Streamlining Content Creation

YouTube is also piloting an innovative “Edit with AI” tool designed to transform raw footage from users’ camera rolls into polished first drafts. This feature intelligently selects standout moments, incorporates background music, smooth transitions, and can even add voiceovers in English or Hindi.

Currently in testing on Shorts and the YouTube Create App, “Edit with AI” is slated for phased rollout across select markets in the coming weeks, promising to significantly reduce editing time and effort for creators.

Safeguarding Creators’ Identities in the AI Era

Recognizing the potential risks accompanying AI advancements, YouTube is proactively addressing concerns around unauthorized use of creators’ likenesses.

The platform is launching an open beta of a likeness detection system available to all YouTube Partner Program members. This tool automatically flags videos that misuse a creator’s facial image, enabling them to request removal of such content.

Think of this as an evolution of YouTube’s copyright enforcement mechanisms, adapted for the AI age where deepfake technology can replicate anyone’s face within moments, posing new challenges for content authenticity and personal rights.
