OpenAI will launch its own AI-centric browser very soon.

Google Chrome is the dominant web browser, despite Apple users choosing to stick with Safari. But a major player is OpenAI, the makers ChatGPT, are reportedly launching their own web browser.

ChatGPT makers get into the browser business.

Kenrick CAI, Krystal HUI, and Anna Tong wrote at Reuters.Reuters reported that OpenAI was close to releasing a web browser powered by AI, which will compete with Alphabet’s dominant Google Chrome. Three people familiar with the matter told Reuters that the browser will launch in the next few weeks and use artificial intelligence to fundamentally alter the way consumers browse the internet. It will give OpenAI greater access to the cornerstone of Google’s success: user information. Two sources claim that OpenAI’s new browser is designed to allow some user interactions to be done within a native chat interface similar to ChatGPT, rather than clicking through to websites. The report gives very little information on how the browser will function.

One interesting detail involves AI agents.

The report offers minimal details on how the browser will work.

The basic features of the new browser will most likely be similar to those offered by other options such as Chrome and Safari. OpenAI, by integrating AI directly into the browser’s core, can offer unique functionality not possible with a third-party extension.

Regardless of the details, it sounds as if we won’t have to wait too long for the launch of the new browser. The report suggests that a release may happen before the end July.

This timing coincides with Apple’s recent announcement of Safari upgrades for iOS 26 & macOS Tahoe and their consideration of an expanded OpenAI Partnership. Google, on the other hand, continues to face regulatory uncertainty regarding Chrome.

In other OpenAI news the company announced today thatthe acquisition of io – Jony Ive’s and Sam Altman’s hardware startup – has been completed after a legal hiccup. The announcement reads: “Jony Ive, LoveFrom and OpenAI remain independent and have taken on deep design and creativity responsibilities.”
