OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT Projects to free users

OpenAI Extends Projects Feature to Free ChatGPT Users

OpenAI has recently expanded access to its Projects functionality, now allowing free-tier ChatGPT users to organize their AI interactions by topic. Previously, this feature was exclusive to paid subscribers, but the company is broadening its availability to enhance user experience across all account types.

What Are Projects and How Do They Enhance ChatGPT Usage?

At its core, Projects act like sophisticated folders that group related ChatGPT conversations. However, their true value lies in the ability to customize AI behavior through tailored instructions and control over which documents or data the AI can access within each project. This makes Projects particularly beneficial for users who want more precise and context-aware AI responses.

Expanded File Upload Limits and Personalization Options

Alongside the wider rollout, OpenAI has increased the number of files users can upload for AI reference within a project. Free users can now add up to five files, while Plus subscribers have a 25-file limit, and Pro users can upload as many as 40. Additionally, all users-regardless of subscription status-can personalize their Projects by selecting unique colors and icons, making it easier to visually distinguish between different topics or workflows.

Gradual Democratization of Premium Features

This move aligns with OpenAI’s ongoing strategy of gradually introducing premium features to free users. Features like Deep Research and ChatGPT Voice initially launched as subscriber-only perks but have since become accessible to everyone. This approach not only enriches the free user experience but also serves as an incentive for users to upgrade to paid plans for enhanced capabilities.

GPT-5 Access and Usage Limits

In a similar vein, OpenAI made the latest GPT-5 model available to all users at launch, though free users face stricter usage caps compared to subscribers. This tiered access model balances broad availability with incentives to subscribe for heavier usage.

Availability Across Platforms

The Projects feature is currently live for free users on the ChatGPT web interface and the Android app. OpenAI has announced that the iOS app will receive this update within the next few days, ensuring a consistent experience across devices.

Looking Ahead

As AI tools become increasingly integral to daily workflows, features like Projects that enhance organization and customization are vital. OpenAI’s incremental rollout strategy reflects a commitment to making advanced AI capabilities accessible while maintaining a sustainable business model.
