OpenAI names new nonprofit ‘advisors’

OpenAI announced the “advisors,” for its new nonprofit committee

: Dolores Huerta (chair), Monica Lozano (co-chair), Dr. Robert K. Ross and Jack Oliver. According to a company announcement made on Tuesdaythe four advisors would help “inform OpenAI’s philanthropic endeavors”.

Huerta, a prominent labor advocate during the 20th century was appointed to the Apple board of directors. Lozano is the president and CEO for the College Futures Foundation. Ross was previously president and CEO of The California Endowment. Oliver, according to OpenAI, is a leader in government, technology and business. In a proposed amicusbrief supporting Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the firm, several former OpenAI employees opposed this change. They accused the company of abandoning its mission to help humanity. A coalition of nonprofits, labor leaders, and philanthropic organizations have also asked California Attorney General Rob Bonta, to investigate OpenAI’s transformation from a nonprofit company into a for profit one.

OpenAI states in its announcement that “OpenAI’s nonprofit won’t be going anywhere” and this commission will help to expand its reach. The commission’s aim is to ensure that OpenAI’s nonprofit becomes a force multiplyer for mission-driven organizations and communities tackling urgent global issues, from health and education to public services and scientific discovery.
