Currently, much attention is focused on the public exchanges between OpenAI’s CEO and co-founder Sam Altman and Elon Musk on Musk’s social platform, X.
However, Altman’s recent announcements about the phased deployment of OpenAI’s newest large language model, GPT-5, hold greater significance for business users and decision-makers.
Key updates include a clearer strategy for allocating computational resources and the rollout of new third-party integrations for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers.

Optimizing Resource Allocation for GPT-5 Usage
In a recent update on X, Altman detailed OpenAI’s approach to managing compute resources amid surging GPT-5 demand over the coming months.
Our compute prioritization plan for the next few months, given the increased GPT-5 demand, is as follows:
1. Ensure existing paying ChatGPT users receive greater overall usage than prior to GPT-5.
2. Then, allocate resources to API requests up to the current capacity and contractual commitments.
– Sam Altman (@sama) August 12, 2025
Altman emphasized that the foremost goal is to enhance total usage for current paying ChatGPT subscribers, though exact usage increases were not disclosed.
Previously, he mentioned testing a cap of 3,000 messages per week in GPT-5’s “thinking” mode-a feature that dedicates more processing power to complex reasoning-for ChatGPT Plus users, who pay $20 monthly.
Interestingly, a developer shared on X that OpenAI imposes a significantly lower limit for GPT-5 “thinking” mode on the ChatGPT Team plan ($30 per user per month), restricting usage to just 200 messages weekly when manually enabled.
OpenAI informed me about GPT-5 usage caps under the Team plan:
· Manual selection of GPT-5-Thinking available
· Usage limit: 200 messages per week
· Upon reaching the limit, a popup appears and GPT-5-Thinking is hidden from the menu

Regarding API access, Altman confirmed that OpenAI will prioritize existing API customers and those with active contracts, ensuring they receive service within the allocated capacity.
He also noted that the infrastructure can accommodate approximately 30% additional API user growth beyond current levels, indicating moderate expansion capability.
While OpenAI has not recently updated its API user count, it previously reported having around 5 million paying business customers utilizing ChatGPT.
Furthermore, Altman revealed plans to nearly double OpenAI’s compute infrastructure within the next five months, aiming to alleviate capacity bottlenecks and enhance performance for both ChatGPT and API users. Specific details about the current infrastructure scale remain undisclosed.
Expanded Third-Party Integrations for ChatGPT Plus and Pro Subscribers
In tandem with resource management updates, OpenAI recently enhanced ChatGPT’s connectivity options. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) can now link their accounts to search and interact with files and projects across platforms such as Box, Canva, Dropbox, HubSpot, Notion, Microsoft SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams.
Shortly thereafter, OpenAI extended these capabilities to include Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts integrations, initially available to Pro users ($200/month), followed by Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Education plans.
For instance, users can query their Gmail inbox or search content within Dropbox or Notion directly during a ChatGPT conversation, eliminating the need to switch between applications.
Pro subscribers also gain access to connectors for Microsoft Teams and GitHub, broadening the scope of integrated workflows.
These new connectors complement existing integrations with Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar, among others.
To activate these features, users must manually connect their external accounts by:
- Clicking their account name in the bottom-left corner of the ChatGPT web interface
- Selecting “Settings” from the menu
- Choosing “Connectors” from the sidebar to access the gallery of available third-party apps
It is important to note that these connectors are currently unavailable to Pro and Plus subscribers located in Europe, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom due to regulatory or compliance considerations.
Additionally, the connectors remain in beta and are disabled by default for Enterprise and Education plans, though administrators can enable them via settings.
Strategic Balance Between Demand and Capacity
By combining deliberate compute capacity planning with enhanced productivity integrations, OpenAI is positioning GPT-5 not only as a more capable AI model but also as a central component of a seamlessly connected digital workspace.
This phased approach to resource allocation prioritizes existing customers while preparing for anticipated growth in demand.
As the planned infrastructure expansion comes online, paying users can expect improved availability and richer integration options that embed ChatGPT more deeply into their daily operations.
Nevertheless, OpenAI’s immediate focus remains on stabilizing GPT-5’s deployment to ensure a smooth and reliable experience for all users.
