Summary.

  • Nvidia, TSMC and TSMC Arizona produced the first Blackwell chips in the U.S.
  • Administration Tariffs sparked onshoring pressure. This move echoes efforts to bring manufacturing back.
  • U.S. Blackwell chips could cement America’s position as a hub for AI hardware and create local employment.

Bringing more production to the US is one of the main focuses of President Trump???s term. There have been varying opinions about whether this was a good or bad idea, but Trump didn’t leave wiggle room. The President’s message, with tariffs having an enormous effect on outsourcing hardware to other countries, was clear: move the production to the US or pay up.

It seems that some large tech companies are warming up to the first option. Nvidia revealed its first Blackwell chips manufactured in the US. This could be a sign of a change in how American companies manufacture their products.

Nvidia displays the first ever Blackwell wafer. In a press statement on the Nvidia News sitethe company announced that it teamed with TSMC in order to produce the first Blackwell wafer on US soil. Jensen Huang – Nvidia CEO – signed the wafer on stage and reflected on how this breakthrough would change the way Nvidia products are made:

This is a historic event for many reasons. This is the first time in recent American History that the most important chip has been manufactured in the United States, by the most advanced fab. TSMC. The partnership is a testament to the best of TSMC. Ray Chuang, the CEO of TSMC Arizona said: “To have gone from arriving in Arizona and delivering the first U.S. made NVIDIA Blackwell in just a few years represents the best of TSMC.” This milestone is based on three decades of partnership between TSMC and NVIDIA, pushing the boundaries of technology with them. It is also based on the unwavering commitment of our employees and local partners who made TSMC Arizona a reality. If the company can make its US-based operation flourish, it could help America become a central hub for AI, both software and hardware. We’ll just have to wait and watch how things unfold. AMD’s claim to have beaten Blackwell could still be true.
