Nvidia 50-series cards no longer support PhysX. This has an impact on older games

Nvidiaโ€™s PhysX offers to developers did not always generate warm feelings. As part of Nvidia’s broader GamesWorks package The Witcher 3 performed at sub-optimal levels during launch. HairWorks, which renders Geralt’s hair in PhysX, was a heavy load on some chipsets.

PhysX began appearing in general-purpose game engines like Unity 5 and was open-sourced first in Limited computer and mobile form More broadlyThe PhysX engine was built into Nvidia’s 32 bit CUDA platform and API as an application. The expiration date has been revealed, and it is dependent on purchasing Nvidia’s video cards in the 50-series when they reach reasonable prices.

We made friends with the real dynamic particles…

Nvidia stated in mid-January that 32-bit applications could not be developed or debugged using the latest versions of their CUDA toolkit. They will still work on cards prior to the 50 series. You could technically keep an older card on your system to ensure compatibility. This is a real dedication to the early 2010’s particle physics.

Technically a 64-bit games could still support PhysX with Nvidia’s newest GPUs. However, the heyday for PhysX as a standalone technology turned on in game settings tended to coincide the 32-bit computing era.

If a 32-bit Nvidia GPU is installed with PhysX enabled, the physics will likely be handled by the CPU, resulting in a game that runs at a lower frame rate. Turning off PhysX completely raised frame rates beyond native GPU support levels. Redditor 19459030 noted that

Borderlands 2, was unable to use PhysX, despite the dust clouds and flapping fabric strips looking interesting. ResetEra completionists have listed other games that include PhysX, including Metro 2030,Assassinโ€™s Creed 4: Black Flagand the 2013 Star Trek game . Commenters on Reddit (#19659013) and ResetEra (#19459030) note that many games listed had performance problems with PhysX before Nvidia forced the games to be turned off or loaded onto a processor. PhysX was able to enable destructible environments in some games (such as theArkham games), fluid simulations and basic gameplay physics.

Anyone working in, or caring about, game preservation always had their hands full. It’s a tough challenge to watch certain aspects of a games operation disappear due to the advancement of the CUDA Platform. This is harder to explain than a cracked CD or Windows compatibility.
