MSI has introduced the MS-CF16 V3.0, a new Pico-ITX single board computer tailored for both industrial environments and tech enthusiasts. This iteration doubles the number of serial communication (COM) ports and general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins compared to its predecessor, enhancing its versatility. The device is slated for release soon.

Compact Design Meets Versatile Processing Power

Built on the Pico-ITX form factor, the MS-CF16 V3.0 is engineered to fit into highly space-constrained setups, making it ideal for embedded systems and industrial automation. MSI offers this SBC with multiple processor choices, including the Intel N97, Intel N150, and the Intel Atom x7433RE.

The Intel N97 and N150 processors are commonly found in budget-friendly mini PCs, delivering adequate performance for everyday lightweight computing tasks. In contrast, the Atom x7433RE, a 9-watt quad-core chip capable of reaching 3.4 GHz, is less common in consumer devices but provides robust performance for embedded applications. Benchmark analyses indicate that the N97 CPU leads the pack in raw processing power among the available options.

Memory Capacity and Expansion Capabilities

The MS-CF16 V3.0 supports up to 16GB of soldered LPDDR5-4800 memory, ensuring fast and efficient data handling for demanding embedded workloads. Expansion is facilitated through M.2 slots, specifically M.2 B and M.2 E keys, allowing users to add storage or wireless modules as needed.

Robust I/O and Additional Features

This SBC is equipped with a comprehensive array of input/output interfaces to accommodate diverse industrial and embedded use cases:

  • Two Ethernet ports supporting 2.5 Gigabit and 1 Gigabit speeds
  • Dual USB 3.2 ports alongside two USB 2.0 ports for peripheral connectivity
  • Video output options including HDMI 4K at 30Hz and Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) at 1200p 60Hz
  • High-definition audio via Realtek ALC897 codec
  • Security enhanced by an Infineon SLB9672 Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

Weighing just 300 grams, the MS-CF16 V3.0 operates passively without the need for active cooling solutions, thanks to its integrated heatsink design. It supports both Windows and Linux operating systems, providing flexibility for various deployment scenarios.

Applications and Market Potential

With its compact footprint, enhanced I/O, and multiple CPU options, the MS-CF16 V3.0 is well-suited for industrial automation, IoT gateways, digital signage, and embedded control systems. The doubling of COM ports and GPIO pins expands its utility in sensor integration and serial device communication, critical for modern industrial setups.

As of mid-2025, the embedded SBC market continues to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 7%, driven by increasing demand for edge computing and smart manufacturing solutions. MSI’s latest offering aligns well with these trends, promising a competitive edge for developers and integrators.
