The Elec report Apple is looking to implement a oxide TFT LCD panel. This is not good news for those who were hoping for an OLED MacBook Air. The initial rumors claimed that the OLED screen would be available on the MacBook Air by 2027.
The claimed reason for choosing an Oxide TFT LCD panel was that OLED technology is still quite expensive in the laptop segment. The high price of the iPad Pro is likely to be the reason for the lackluster sales. This is due to the expensive OLED display. Apple chose oxide TFT LCDs to act as a stepping-stone until it can lower the cost of OLEDs. The report indicates that OLED MacBook Airs are expected to hit the market around 2029.
However, oxide TFT LCDs offer many advantages over the standard silicon TFTs used in MacBook Airs. They have faster electron mobility which allows for smoother visuals, and overall better performance. We’ve seen these on the current MacBook Pros.
