Bloomberg reports that Netflix has begun testing search powered by OpenAI

. According to the report,

the new search engine allows users to “search for shows using much more specific terms including the subscriber’s mood, for instance.” This OpenAI-powered Search will also allow users make queries that go “well beyond genres or actor’s names.”

Some users in Australia and New Zealand have already been able to try the feature. Netflix spokesperson MoMo Zhou confirmed

to The Verge that Bloomberg ‘s story is accurate. Zhou confirms that the test will be expanded to the US in the “coming weeks and months”. There are no plans to expand the feature beyond iOS. Zhou says that the beta is still in its early stages and we are in a learning and listening phase. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a comment request. In an interview with Decoder’s Podcast, Nilay Patel The Verge’s Editor-in-Chief, last year, Nilay Patel asked Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters how the company thought about AI. Here is part of his answer:

Machine learning and artificial intelligence have been used in our recommender system for a long time. We’ve done that for about 20 years. We think it’s our job to be proactive in identifying areas of technological innovation. How can we use this to both serve creators and allow them to tell stories in more compelling ways? And then, how can we serve our members with better user experiences?
