MTN and ICASA Collaborate to Address Telecom Challenges in South Africa
Joint Efforts to Lower Communication Costs and Expand Digital Access
MTN recently engaged in discussions with South Africa’s telecommunications regulator, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), aiming to resolve ongoing issues in the telecom sector. Key topics included tackling the high cost of data, bridging the digital divide, enhancing digital infrastructure, and promoting innovation through strengthened public-private partnerships. Yolanda Castro, the incoming Deputy CEO of MTN South Africa, emphasized that productive dialogue with regulators is crucial for fostering an inclusive and accessible telecom environment.
Commitment to Affordable and Reliable Digital Services for All
Castro reiterated MTN’s dedication to providing affordable, dependable, and cutting-edge digital solutions to every South African. She highlighted that collaboration with ICASA is vital to achieving this vision, ensuring that digital services reach underserved communities and contribute to national development.
Historical Context: Government Policies on Communication Costs
Since 2006, South African authorities have implemented various policies aimed at reducing communication expenses. A notable example is the significant decrease in mobile call termination rates-from R1.25 (approximately $0.072) in 2006 to R0.12 (around $0.0069) by 2018. These reductions have made voice calls more affordable. However, challenges persist, particularly regarding high data prices and uneven infrastructure distribution, especially in rural and marginalized areas. Termination rates refer to fees one network charges another to complete calls, which often translate into higher costs for consumers.
MTN’s Strategic Vision: Ambition 2025 and Technology Expansion
Guided by its Ambition 2025 strategy, MTN continues to invest heavily in next-generation technologies. The company is advancing projects like the “Smartphone for All” initiative, which aims to make internet-enabled smartphones more accessible and affordable. Additionally, MTN is accelerating the deployment of 4G and 5G networks to enhance connectivity nationwide, supporting South Africa’s digital transformation.
Enhancing Public Services Through eGovernment and Cybersecurity
MTN also underscored the growing importance of eGovernment platforms in streamlining public service delivery. Examples include digital tax filing systems, electronic identification programs, and cybersecurity operations centers designed to protect sensitive data. The company stressed that the success of these initiatives hinges on robust collaboration among government bodies, private sector players, and citizens.
Fostering Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for a Digital Future
This dialogue forms part of MTN’s broader multi-stakeholder engagement framework, which encourages cooperation between industry leaders and government agencies. Mothibi Ramusi, Chairman of MTN South Africa, clarified that the meeting was focused on partnership rather than regulation. He stated, “By working together, we can leverage technology to close the digital divide and elevate South Africa’s position as a global digital competitor.”
