Mike Verdu, Netflix Games, leads new generative AI initiative.

Mike Verdu announced on LinkedIn that he would be taking on a new role at Netflix Games to lead the company’s efforts to capitalize on generative artificial intelligence.

Vice President of GenAI Games, the role, focuses on generating AI as a next step for creating games with large teams.

GenAI is the next challenge. Verdu writes on LinkedIn that he hasn’t been so excited about an industry opportunity since the 1990s, when a new game was released every few months and redefined what’s possible. “It was a great time to make games, as talented creators showed us all what the future looked. Guess what? Guess what? Verdu discusses in his blog post how AI will accelerate game development and act as a catalyst to help creators make better decisions. Verdu writes, “I can’t imagine how lucky I am to still be alive at a time when such a big wave is about to hit gaming.” “Many fear this technology, but I’m a game-maker by heart and I see its ability to unlock us all, to create mind blowing new experiences for players, and to lift us to new levels. We’ll need to adapt and change. But when have we as an industry failed to do so?

Netflix, for example, is not the only gaming publisher who has taken this approach. Electronic Arts is placing a lot of faith in AI as a key component to their game development process. Electronic Arts recently laid off a significant portion of their staff, so skepticism may be warranted.
