Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, and Meta are in a rush to build superintelligence technology. The company has been poaching AI experts, while Zuckerberg announced Monday that Meta was building a 5-gigawatt Data Center called Hyperion.

There is a palpable urgency. As SemiAnalysis Business Insider reported on last week. Meta is so eager for a boost in computing power that they are literally erecting temporary tents to house data centers while their facilities are under construction.

This is all evidence that Meta wants its AI capacity to be built up faster, after falling behind competitors such as OpenAI, xAI and Google — and Zuckerberg doesn’t want to wait for the typical construction timelines in order to close the gap.

This design isn’t a matter of beauty or redundancy. SemiAnalysis’ report stated that the goal is to get compute online quickly. “From prefabricated cooling and power modules to ultra-light constructions, speed is essential as there is no backup generator (i.e., no diesel generators are in sight),” the report added. As for Meta’s Hyperion data centre, Meta spokesperson Ashley Gabriel told TechCrunch it would be located in Louisiana with a capacity of at least 2 gigawatts.
