iOS 26 to integrate ChatGPT-5 into Apple intelligence

Expected to launch with the iPhone 17

Apple’s soon-to-release iOS 26 is set to integrate Openai’s latest model for ChatGPT, GPT-5.

Apple made this announcement via 9to5mac on August 7, shortly after the initial OpenAI announcement of the new GPT model.

The current integration of ChatGPT in Apple intelligence uses the GPT-4o models. With this model, Apple devices can use ChatGPT to answer questions about photos or documents, in writing tools to compose text or images, and visual intelligence through access to camera controls.

iOS 26, which will run on the newest ChatGPT model, will provide users with all previous benefits while also adding a new Live Translation feature that can interpret real-time conversations on FaceTime calls and messages. This new GPT model will also include an upgrade to Visual Intelligence, a systemwide tool that helps with content searching.

Similar to the integration of ChatGPT in iOS 18, iOS 26 will maintain privacy by obscuring sensitive information like IP addresses from ChatGPT, while also preventing OpenAI from storing any user data.

iOS 26 is expected to launch in September along with the iPhone 17.
