iOS 18.2 requirement ups how much storage Apple Intelligence needs

Apple’s AI will need offline storage because the company runs their AI locally.

Apple Intelligence requires storage, which has increased to 7GB in iOS 18.2.

Apple Intelligence is local and therefore requires access to local AI models. Apple Intelligence was only 4GB when iOS 18.1 launched, but it has increased by 3GB since then with the addition of Genmoji and Visual Intelligence.

It is possible that each new Apple Intelligence function will take up more storage space on your device. While 7GB may not seem like a lot, in a few more years, that amount could grow. My iPhone, which runs iOS 18.3 beta, only uses 3.13GB for Apple Intelligence. This indicates that Apple’s storage requirement of 7GB may be a factor in future updates. Apple should increase the storage capacity of its products. The iPhone 16 Pro Max, however, starts at 256GB. It is likely that the company will continue to use 128GB for the minimum storage. The company will upgrade the iPad mini to Apple Intelligence in late 2024 and bump it from 64GB up to 128GB.

You can turn off the Apple Intelligence features in the Settings app on your Mac or iPhone if you don’t want to use them. You may need to do a factory reset to clear the space. You can also see the exact amount of storage that AI takes up on your phone or tablets by going to Settings> General, Phone Storage and scrolling down to the bottom. Select iOS.
