IHS Towers sells Rwanda unit to Paradigm Tower Ventures

Paradigm Tower Ventures Acquires IHS Rwanda for $274.5 Million

Paradigm Tower Ventures, a burgeoning Sub-Saharan African enterprise dedicated to expanding shared wireless infrastructure, has completed its inaugural acquisition by purchasing IHS Rwanda Ltd. for $274.5 million. IHS Rwanda operates an extensive portfolio of 1,467 telecom tower sites, marking a significant milestone in Paradigm’s strategic growth within the region.

About the Acquisition and Strategic Implications

This transaction represents a pivotal move in IHS Holding’s broader strategy to optimize its African operations and enhance shareholder value. As one of the globe’s foremost independent telecom tower operators, IHS is recalibrating its focus towards markets exhibiting robust growth potential, such as Nigeria and Brazil, where it manages over 37,000 towers. The divestment of its Rwandan assets aligns with this refocused approach amid intensifying competition and heightened investor expectations.

Financial Backing and Leadership Vision

Paradigm Tower Ventures’ acquisition was facilitated by a consortium of equity and debt financiers, notably including Convergence Partners and Rand Merchant Bank, a subsidiary of FirstRand Bank Limited. These institutions served as the exclusive funders, lead arrangers, and financial advisors for the deal. Stephen Harris, Co-founder and Chairperson of Paradigm, emphasized Rwanda’s dynamic market environment, stating, “Rwanda presents a compelling opportunity with its escalating demand for wireless infrastructure.” He further highlighted Paradigm’s commitment to delivering secure, high-quality mobile network infrastructure tailored to customer needs.

Paradigm’s Expanding Footprint in East Africa

In addition to its recent acquisition, Paradigm Infrastructure holds a 30% stake in Minara Tanzania, a company managing approximately 1,800 tower sites that provide shared infrastructure services to leading Tanzanian mobile network operators. This investment underscores Paradigm’s strategic intent to build a robust wireless infrastructure platform across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Industry Context and Future Outlook

Sam Darwish, Chairman and CEO of IHS Towers, reflected on the company’s decade-long success in Rwanda, expressing gratitude towards the government and partners for fostering an investor-friendly environment. He remarked, “Our achievements in Rwanda have been built on strong collaboration and a supportive regulatory framework.” The acquisition by Paradigm signals renewed confidence from investors in Africa’s digital infrastructure sector, which continues to attract significant capital amid the continent’s rapid mobile connectivity growth.

Growing Demand for Telecom Infrastructure in Africa

With mobile penetration in Sub-Saharan Africa reaching over 50% as of 2023 and expected to grow steadily, the need for reliable and scalable telecom infrastructure is more critical than ever. Shared tower models, like those operated by Paradigm and IHS, play a vital role in reducing costs and accelerating network expansion, enabling millions of users to access faster and more dependable mobile services.
