How Yichao “Peak” Ji became a global AI app hitmaker

Yichao “Peak” Ji: Pioneering AI Innovation on the Global Stage

Recognized as one of MIT Technology Review’s 2025 Innovators Under 35, Yichao Ji-known as “Peak”-has rapidly emerged as a leading figure in AI development. When he introduced Manus, an AI assistant created by the Beijing-based startup Butterfly Effect, in a modestly produced video, few anticipated the viral impact it would have. Ji’s fluent English and clear vision helped Manus capture global attention within days, amassing a waiting list of nearly two million users shortly after its debut.

Revolutionizing AI Assistance with Manus

At first glance, Manus resembles a typical chatbot, allowing users to ask questions via a chat interface. However, its capabilities extend far beyond simple responses. Manus can autonomously complete complex tasks-such as locating apartments that fit specific budgets and preferences-by decomposing these requests into actionable steps. It then leverages a cloud-hosted virtual machine equipped with a browser and other utilities to navigate websites, fill out forms, and execute tasks seamlessly.

Currently headquartered in Singapore, Ji spearheads the product and infrastructure development as Butterfly Effect accelerates its international expansion. His leadership combines deep technical expertise with a keen understanding of user experience, positioning Manus as a frontrunner in AI-driven productivity tools.

From Early Curiosity to Tech Trailblazer

Ji’s journey began in a multicultural environment-born to a professor and an IT specialist, he spent part of his childhood in Boulder, Colorado, before returning to Beijing. His early exposure to English and technology set the stage for his future endeavors. Inspired by elementary school robotics and self-taught programming, Ji cultivated a passion for software development, drawing influence from tech icons like Bill Gates and the open-source movement.

In 2008, Apple’s launch of the App Store ignited Ji’s enthusiasm for app creation. By 2010, as a high school sophomore, he developed Mammoth, a customizable iPhone browser that quickly became China’s most downloaded third-party browser by an individual developer. This achievement earned him the Macworld Asia Grand Prize in 2011 and a spot on Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list at just 20 years old.

Throughout his teenage years, Ji continued to innovate, creating apps such as a budgeting tool themed around a popular board game. Despite facing legal challenges over trademark issues, these experiences sharpened his acumen for product development and risk management.

Entrepreneurial Ventures and AI Expertise

In 2012, Ji founded Peak Labs and later developed Magi, a search engine that aggregated web data to answer user queries using a proprietary language model-an early precursor to today’s AI-powered search technologies. Although Magi attracted millions of users initially, it found greater success in enterprise applications before being sold in 2022.

Manus represents Ji’s most ambitious project to date. Alongside cofounders Zhang Tao and Xiao Hong, who bring complementary skills in product design and organizational leadership, Ji embodies the new wave of Chinese entrepreneurs with global aspirations. Their collaboration, supported by venture capital firm ZhenFund, exemplifies the blend of technical mastery and strategic vision driving China’s AI innovation.

A Global Vision for AI Development

Colleagues describe Ji as a rapid thinker and dedicated builder, adept at navigating both the technical and business aspects of AI. His active participation in open-source communities has earned him recognition and numerous GitHub stars, reflecting his commitment to collaborative innovation.

With recent investment led by US-based Benchmark, Butterfly Effect has relocated its operations to Singapore and is targeting a worldwide audience. Manus operates on a global infrastructure, utilizing platforms such as Claude Sonnet, Microsoft Azure, and open-source tools like Browser Use. This international framework highlights the increasingly borderless nature of AI entrepreneurship, where talent, technology, and capital flow fluidly across regions.

For Ji, the mission transcends commercial success. “I hope Manus is the last product I’ll ever build,” he shares. “Because if I have another big idea, I’ll just let Manus handle it.” His vision is to create a lasting legacy through AI that empowers users globally, marking a new chapter in the evolution of intelligent digital assistants.
