Honor’s 400 series midrange smartphone features a 200-megapixel sensor and the usual AI tools.

For a long time, a company had not released a phone with a ridiculously high number of megapixels. The double-digit pixels on flagship phones are used to reduce the pixel size without affecting the quality. Honor’s midrange 400 Series is shipping with a 200-megapixel sensor that works hand-in-hand with AI to make the most of all this data. In this economy, 200 megapixels? Appearantly so.

The 400 series is the latest in Honor’s not-at-all-confusingly-named “N” series of midrange handsets which bear numbers. While there is a lower-end version of the 400, Honor’s focus was (as usual) on the 400 Pro 5G, and the regular 400 5G. Both models have a 200-megapixel primary camera, paired with a 1/1.4-inch Samsung sensor that offers both optical and electrical image stabilization. Both models are equipped with a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 50 megapixel front-facing camera. The Pro, however, has an additional 50 megapixel telephoto lens that, according to the company, will produce impressive digital zoom.

These handsets are not so much about the raw numbers as they are about what the AI can do with the images. Honor claims that the phones can enhance portraits, remove passers-by and create videos using still images. They can also remove reflective glare from photos taken through glass panes. On-device generative expansion will also expand the edge of a photo if you think the original was cropped too closely when you took it. Honor claims that the phone will use AI in order to create film simulations to annoy your Fuji-owning friends. Honor has not yet clarified how much of these AI innovations are included in the phone, and how much requires an additional subscription.

The 400 Pro’s specs are not bad either: It has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, a 16GB RAM, and a 5,300mAh lithium-ion battery. You’ll be looking at a 6.7″ 2,800 x 128 120Hz AMOLED screen with a maximum brightness of 5,000nits. If you choose the regular 400, you’ll receive a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, 8GB of RAM, and a 6.55″ 120Hz AMOLED display with a similar peak brightness. Honor’s AI thread optimization will be available on both handsets for improved performance, especially when gaming on the move. The graphics engine has been tweaked to handle massive photo libraries better without stuttering.

Honor 400 series are available in Europe and the UK starting today. The Pro 5G costs EUR800/PS700. The regular 400 5G is available for EUR500/PS400 if you prefer 256GB of storage, and EUR550/PS450 if 512GB is what you’re after. If you’re in the market for a cheaper option, the “Lite version” is available for EUR300. However, the company did not share any specifications for this particular handset. As per usual, no information is available on whether this handset will be coming to the US. You can import it yourself. Honor is keen to highlight that the company has committed itself to providing six years’ Android support for this handset. This means that buyers can expect at least six years of Android support, including OS and security updates. Android 16 is also expected to arrive on the handsets before the end the year.
