Grok takes over: X abandons Google for in house AI translations

X (formerly Twitter) has replaced Google Translate by its own artificial intelligence, Grok. This will power all post translations. This move marks a significant advancement in the maturity of xAI technology. Grok will now handle the ‘Translate” button on a message in a foreign tongue. The change will be rolled out globally, and marks a significant shift away from Google’s longstanding translation service.

The transition is more than simply switching out a provider; it’s building a vertically-integrated platform. X can use its own technology to leverage Grok’s unique access to data in real-time from the platform. This will allow it to provide more contextually-aware and nuanced interpretations.

As someone who only speaks English and is part of a global platform such as X, I am acutely aware of its limitations. I’m so happy we have technology that can help us overcome the language barrier in 2025.

Up-to-date information
Grok’s main advantage is that it can pull up-to-date, real-time information directly from X. This ensures that translations and answers remain current.

Contextual understanding
Grok’s AI is designed to understand nuance and context in conversations on X. These can be fast-paced, filled with slang and community references.

Deeper Integration
The move is part of a larger picture to make X an ‘everything’ app, where features such as AI, payments, social media, and community references are all seamlessly integrated under one roof.

X finally replaced Google Translate for translating posts with Grok! Good move!
