Google’s new AI model is better than the top weather forecasting system

Google’s DeepMind team released a new AI model for weather forecasting this week called GenCast.

In a Nature articleDeepMind researchers found that GenCast was superior to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ENS, which is the world’s best operational forecasting system.

In addition, in In a blogthe DeepMind team explained the technology in a more understandable way: While its previous model was “deterministic” and provided a “single, best estimate of weather in the future, GenCast is “an ensemble of 50 or so predictions, each representing a potential weather trajectory,” creating a complex probability distribution of future scenarios.
