Elon Musk’s Grok bot is banned by a quarter European firms

According to a new study by cybersecurity firm Netskope, a quarter of European organizations have banned Elon Musk’s generative AI bot Grok.

By contrast, the most popular AI application, ChatGPT is only blocked in Europe by 9.8% of organizations. Google’s Gemini is the runner-up and is blocked by 9.2%. Grok was recently in the spotlight for a series of blunders. These include spreading falsified claims regarding a “white genocid” in South Africa, and raising doubts Holocaust factual information. These incidents have raised questions about Grok’s privacy and security controls. The report stated that the chatbot was often blocked in favor of “more secured or better-aligned alternative.”

Neil Thacker said the bans highlighted a wider trend in how European organizations use popular GenAI Tools.

Businesses are becoming aware that all apps are not the same when it comes to how they handle data privacy and ownership of data shared with the app. They also differ in the amount of detail they reveal in regards to the way the model is trained using any data shared within prompts.

GenAI has become widely used in Europe. According to the report, 91% of companies have integrated cloud-based chatbots within their operations. Not all tools are equally welcomed. Stable Diffusion’s image creator, Stability AI, UK, is the most-blocked AI app in Europe. It has been blocked by 41% of organizations. The report found that the app was frequently flagged due to concerns about privacy or licensing issues.

Gianpietro Cutolo is a cloud threat researcher for Netskope. He said that organisations are becoming more aware of the risks associated with specific AI bots. “They are becoming more aware that not all AI has the same level of data security,” said Cutolo.

The growing opposition to Grok comes amid a series of upsets in Musk’s empire including turmoil at Tesla. The sales of the car company in Europe have dropped dramatically this year. Last month, they fell by 52% year-on-year. Some

analysts have attributed this decline to Musk’s role in the Trump administration, and his open support for far-right politicians. Musk called Grok the ultimate “truth-seeking AI“. Now, a similar reputational fallout could be catching up to Grok. Tickets are now on sale for the event, which takes place in Amsterdam on June 19-20. Use the code TNWXMEDIA2025 to get 30% off.
