The billionaire SpaceX and Tesla CEO, who had been quiet after a spectacular public fight with President Donald Trump in June 5, has returned to politics with a series explosive attacks. This period of calm is over. In the last 72-hours, he launched some of the most violent attacks he’s ever made against “One Big Beautiful Bill”President Trump’s signature piece of legislation.
Musk claims that the bill, which includes huge tax cuts, is a concession to Big Oil, and will increase the national debt in a dangerous way. Musk, who previously headed the Department of Government Efficiency (the famous DOGE) of the Trump administration, believes that the priority should be to cut costs, and not increase spending. Musk did not hesitate to express his anger.
The billionaire said on X that “every member of Congress who campaigned for reducing government expenditure and then immediately voted in favor of the largest debt increase in the history should hang their heads in shame!” He added a promise of political retribution, saying: “And if this is the last thing that I do on Earth, they will lose their primaries next year.”

Musk believes that neither the Republicans in control of the government nor the Democratic opponents represent a significant part of Americans. He seems to be convinced that the ground is ripe for a new movement. With a net worth estimated at $363 billion by Bloomberg Billionaire IndexMusk certainly has the financial means to follow through. Musk spent $290 million in the 2024 election cycle to support Trump and other Republican candidates. History shows that third-party candidates in the U.S. electoral process struggle. Ross Perot’s 1992 run for president won 18.9% of the votes but no electoral seats. More recent candidates, like Jill Stein, have polled under 1%. This threat also appears to formalize Musk’s divorce from Trump’s administration. He made this clear by publicly supporting Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky, who voted in opposition to the bill and said that the president did not have the authority to bomb Iran unless Congress approved. Trump has been enraged by Massie since then.
