E-commerce platform eBay offers free ChatGPT training and tools

eBay Launches AI Activate to Empower Small Businesses with GPT-Driven E-Commerce Solutions

eBay has partnered with OpenAI to introduce an innovative initiative designed to equip small businesses on its platform with advanced AI tools. Through the newly unveiled eBay AI Activate program, sellers will receive complimentary access to ChatGPT Enterprise and bespoke GPT-powered productivity applications developed specifically for e-commerce.

Accelerating AI Adoption Among UK Small Businesses

Starting immediately, this £3 million investment aims to onboard 10,000 UK-based small enterprises by the end of 2025. The initiative offers a full year of free access to cutting-edge AI technologies alongside tailored training sessions, enabling sellers to harness AI’s potential to streamline operations, enhance customer engagement, and boost sales.

Participants will benefit from personalized support, including collaboration with eBay experts to create custom GPT models that address unique business challenges and growth opportunities within the marketplace.

Bridging the AI Knowledge Gap

Research conducted by eBay reveals a strong enthusiasm for AI among small business owners in the UK, with 69% expressing excitement or curiosity about its capabilities. However, many still face hurdles in effectively integrating AI into their workflows to generate tangible results.

Eve Williams, General Manager of eBay UK, emphasized the urgency: “The question is no longer if businesses should adopt AI, but how swiftly they can implement it to stay competitive. Those who delay risk falling behind in an increasingly AI-driven economy.”

Economic Impact and Expert Insights

Ronnie Chatterji, Chief Economist at OpenAI, highlighted the transformative potential of this collaboration: “Small businesses constitute over 99% of UK firms and are vital to the nation’s economy. Historically, they have lacked access to productivity-enhancing tools available to larger corporations. By equipping 10,000 entrepreneurs with world-class AI, we are investing directly in the UK’s economic backbone and addressing the productivity divide.”

“By putting world-class AI tools in the hands of 10,000 UK entrepreneurs, we’re investing in the UK’s economic engine. If we want to close the productivity gap, this is where to start.”

Supporting this view, the International Monetary Fund projects that widespread AI adoption could contribute up to £470 billion to the UK’s GDP by 2035.

Government Support for SME Digital Transformation

Blair McDougall, Minister for Small Business and Economic Transformation, underscored the importance of initiatives like eBay AI Activate: “Even a modest 1% annual growth in SMEs could inject £320 billion into the economy by 2030. Our Small Business Strategy is committed to providing SMEs with the digital tools and support necessary to thrive, including partnerships with industry leaders such as eBay and OpenAI.”

eBay’s Broader AI Vision

Beyond this program, eBay is integrating AI across its global operations. The company has rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise internally to foster innovation, creativity, and efficiency among its teams.

Nitzan Mekel-Bobrov, eBay’s Chief AI Officer, remarked, “AI is revolutionizing e-commerce, and eBay is fully embracing this shift. Leveraging three decades of marketplace expertise combined with state-of-the-art AI models, we are reimagining the buying and selling experience for millions of users worldwide.”
