Digital Nomads: Mark Irozuru left Nigeria to chase stability. Now he is building it into Bitcoin.

Behind the Scenes of Blockchain: The Vital Role of DevOps

From mobile banking apps to cutting-edge innovations like blockchain, every digital service depends on an unseen infrastructure that keeps everything running smoothly. Servers operate continuously, code executes flawlessly, and networks communicate seamlessly-all thanks to dedicated professionals who ensure stability behind the scenes. One such expert is Mark Irozuru, based in Slough, UK, who leads the DevOps team at Botanix, a pioneering blockchain company developing a Bitcoin-based Layer 2 network. According to Irozuru, the essence of DevOps lies in preserving system reliability: “You only notice when something breaks.”

Ensuring Reliability in Blockchain Networks

Irozuru’s primary responsibility is to guarantee the dependable operation of Botanix’s Layer 2 blockchain, a platform designed to accelerate Bitcoin transactions and expand its utility beyond mere value storage. His daily tasks involve refining code deployment pipelines, managing data flows, conducting thorough audits of blockchain validators, and maintaining uninterrupted uptime. This role demands meticulous attention to detail, technical expertise, and patience to build a robust infrastructure that could revolutionize how millions interact with digital assets.

Charting a Career Path in Web3

Originally from Nigeria, Irozuru relocated to the UK in 2022 to pursue further education and career growth. Prior to this, he worked remotely as a DevOps Engineer for a crypto startup, balancing long coding sessions with frequent power outages and international coordination. Seeking greater security and professional advancement, he enrolled in a cybersecurity master’s program at Bournemouth University, which broadened his understanding of global tech ecosystems.

He praises London’s tech scene for its dynamic environment, stating, “The network, the structure, and the pace here push you to evolve.” His entry into blockchain was catalyzed by mentorship from a senior engineer he connected with on LinkedIn, which led to a role at DevOps-as-a-Service, supporting startups worldwide. One of his early projects involved working directly with a CTO on decentralized finance (DeFi) and smart contracts, exposing him to the fast-evolving Web3 landscape.

Building a Blockchain Network That Never Sleeps

At Botanix Labs, Irozuru oversees the development of a Layer 2 blockchain built atop Bitcoin, designed to enhance transaction speed and enable decentralized financial applications. To visualize this, consider Bitcoin as a secure but busy highway. Botanix’s Layer 2 acts like a dedicated express lane, offering faster travel while maintaining a connection to the main road for security and verification.

The network operates through a decentralized group of independent computers called validators. Each validator holds a copy of the blockchain and verifies transactions to prevent fraud, collectively maintaining an immutable ledger. “Validators function like referees,” Irozuru explains, “ensuring fairness and accuracy in every transaction.”

His workday typically begins with exercise and breakfast, followed by intensive technical collaboration with a globally distributed team spanning Europe, Asia, and North America. “I might be on a call at 3 a.m. with a validator in Singapore,” he notes. “Balancing energy is crucial because the system must run continuously.”

In July, Irozuru led the successful launch of Botanix’s mainnet, a milestone achieved after months of rigorous testing, security audits, and coordination with 16 validator partners worldwide, including mining operators from China and Europe. The exhaustive security vetting ensured no partner systems were compromised, resulting in a flawless rollout. Since then, the network has maintained 100% uptime, a testament to his team’s dedication and his proudest achievement.

For Irozuru, DevOps is proactive engineering: anticipating and preventing issues before they arise. “People often think DevOps is about firefighting,” he says, “but it’s really about creating calm and stability. Making systems boring-in the best way.”

Navigating the Competitive Global Web3 DevOps Landscape

Working internationally has reshaped Irozuru’s perspective on engineering careers. The global demand for senior DevOps engineers is intense, with companies seeking professionals who can deliver immediate results. “The market is highly competitive,” he admits. “Continuous learning is essential.”

While his cybersecurity degree provided foundational knowledge, Irozuru emphasizes that hands-on experience-solving real-world problems under pressure and understanding complex network interactions-has been invaluable. “In the UK, you must constantly prove your capabilities, even if you were a senior engineer elsewhere,” he explains.

A UK-based recruiter echoes this sentiment, noting that many African professionals face challenges translating their seniority internationally. Global employers prioritize collaboration, documentation, and scalability, sometimes requiring candidates to accept roles perceived as lateral moves to gain local experience. Irozuru’s own journey reflects this, progressing from mid-level positions at Nautilus Technologies and BlockOps to leading the DevOps team at Botanix. “It’s not about losing confidence,” he says, “but adapting and growing until you lead again.”

Advancing Africa’s Web3 Ecosystem While Embracing a Global Lifestyle

At the time of our conversation, Irozuru was preparing for a trip to Barcelona, followed by plans to visit the United States. His frequent travels blend work and leisure, helping him stay connected to the evolving global tech landscape. “New environments keep my mind sharp,” he shares. “Seeing how different cultures use technology inspires creativity and patience.”

Reflecting on Africa’s potential, Irozuru believes the continent possesses the talent to develop world-class blockchain solutions. However, he stresses that true progress hinges on simplifying technology for everyday users. “Bitcoin holds immense promise for decentralized finance in Africa,” he says, “but many startups overcomplicate their products. We need solutions that are intuitive and accessible.”

He envisions Africa’s next technological leap not as a replication of global platforms but through seamless integration of blockchain into familiar tools like savings apps, mobile banking, and payment systems. The goal is to enable users to benefit from on-chain technology without grappling with private keys or complex mechanics. “Simplify, and adoption will follow,” he asserts.

This philosophy underpins his work at Botanix, where he aims to humanize technology. “Good engineering should be invisible,” Irozuru reflects. “When done right, people don’t even notice it.”

In a world obsessed with constant innovation and disruption, Irozuru’s mission is to create technology that feels ordinary-an extraordinary challenge in itself.
