Always looking for an angle, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre blamed the Liberal Party’s price hike on Netflix earlier this week, despite the fact that the increase affects countries around the world.
In an Poilievre’s 1.3 million Twitter followers are told that Justin Trudeau is to blame for the $2 Netflix price increase in a tweet aimed at highlighting the recent fights against tech giants paying taxes in Canada.
You will have to pay more for your favorite movies and shows thanks to the new Liberal tax.

However, this is likely untrue since even in places where there are no streaming taxes, Netflix prices have increased. The standard plan in the U.S. has increased by $1and the most expensive plan by $2. Netflix may be raising its prices to encourage more users to upgrade to the ad supported tier, which is where they can make the most profit.
The company mentions Canada in the actual earnings reporttwice, back-to-back. The report mentions that Netflix has rolled out their ads network in Canada: “We’ve fully transitioned our ad serving to Canada in-house and rolled out our first-party ad tech platform,” it reads.
In the paragraph that follows, it says: “As we invest in programming and provide more value to our members, we may ask our members to occasionally pay a little bit more so that we can further improve Netflix.” The tweet also implies if you sign the petition to cancel DST, Netflix may reduce its cost. I can guarantee this will never happen.
The tweet has received over 200,000 views and 700 comments on Twitter. Some of the comments are people complaining about taxes. Others have opposing views.
