ChatGPT Projects feature brings order to your AI chaos

OpenAI hasn’t slowed down in its efforts to add new features and functions to its ChatGPT AI Bot. One of the latest features to be rolled out, exclusive to paying users for now, is ChatGPT Projects.

This feature is a big step forward in keeping data and conversations organized in ChatGPT. It allows you to organize your discussions in ChatGPT into separate spaces. These can include documents, web searches and custom instructions.

For example, you can create a project to research birthday present ideas and another for analyzing the state of the film industry. Remember, as always, generative AI is not perfect. You can use Projects however you like, but they can make a real difference to the workflows within ChatGPT.

Get started with ChatGPT Projects.

Projects include conversations, files and instructions.

These instructions are for ChatGPT’s web appis available, but projects are also accessible through the navigation pane of the ChatGPT mobile application. Click on the navigation pane to the left. If you don’t see the navigation bar, click the icon at the top-left corner of the screen to reveal it. Click the + icon to create a project if you already have one.

You’ll be asked to name your project immediately. You can move existing chats in and out of project, or between them if necessary. Click on the three dots beside a chat to find these options. You can start a conversation first and then move it into a project at a later time, instead of starting with the project. ChatGPT will put you in a clean, new project. You have several options: you can start a chat, add files or instructions

or you can start a brand new project. All files and instructions (such as “respond to me as if I’m a novice in this subject”) you add will be carried across all project chats. This saves you from having upload the same files repeatedly.

That’s all you need to get started with ChatGPT projects. You can’t do much for individual projects. However, if you click on the three dots at the top right corner of the project page, you will be able to rename or delete the project. If you delete a project, it will also remove all the conversations within it. As you create projects, they will appear on the left side of the screen. Individual conversations are nestled inside projects.

Projects can’t currently be shared with others (at least not yet).

How To Use ChatGPT Projects.

Instructions can be written that will persist throughout the project. David Nield

There is no right or wrong way to use ChatGPT projects. It’s your choice how you use the feature, just like Gmail labels. You could create a project that helps you finish a novel, plan a career change or store a collection strategies for mindfulness and mediation.

Let’s say you are planning a family weekend away. You can use the instructions section of the project to explain when and where you’re going, and how old your children are, so you don’t have to repeat it each time. You can upload any plans you have made or information about your destination. ChatGPT will use this along with its own training data.

You could also use a project to build a music recommendation engine that is finely tuned. You can enter your preferences and tastes into the project instructions, then upload files that catalog all the music you have listened to. (Yes, we’re aware that you are out there.). The playlists could be based on a specific theme or artist.

At any time you can change the files and instructions you have given, but these changes will not affect conversations you already had with ChatGPT. The AI bot will use information that is available at the time of each prompt.

You can attach specific files to specific chats within projects by using the paperclip icon. You can also access other tools, such as the image generator, by clicking the toolbox symbol underneath the text prompt box. This will give you access to the ChatGPT canvas interface, which is similar to Google Docs more than Google Chat.
