ChatGPT now remembers and references all of your previous chats.

Unlike older saved memories, the information stored via the chat history memory is not accessible or tunable. It’s either on, or it’s off.

Starting today, the new memory approach will be rolled out to ChatGPT Pro and Plus users. It looks like this will be a gradual rollout over the next couple of weeks. The rollout excludes certain countries and regions, including the UK, European Union (including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), and Switzerland.

OpenAI states that these new features will be available to Enterprise, Team, Edu, and Team users at a future, yet-to-be-announced, date. The company has not mentioned plans to make them available to free users. You’ll see “Introducing new, improved memory.”

in a popup when you gain access.

This memory expansion will be welcomed by some people, as it will make ChatGPT more useful if you are looking for answers tailored to your situation, personality and preferences.

Other users will be skeptical of a chat history memory black box that cannot be customized or tweaked for privacy reasons. It’s important that you know that, even before the new memory function was introduced, conversations with ChatGPT could be stored on OpenAI servers. The chatbot has always been able to incorporate the contents of these logs into its responses, it’s just not fully integrated until now.

Like the old memory feature you can disable it completely by clicking a checkbox. It will not be used in conversations with the Temporary chat flag.
