ChatGPT for WhatsApp can now hear, see, and remember conversations from other places

OpenAI is upgrading ChatGPT, the phone number that you can use to text on WhatsApp. It will be more like the mobile application and web portal. You won’t have to type everything you want to tell the AI chatbot anymore. You can now send a photo, or record a voice message that ChatGPT “see” “hear” will respond using the text form.

You can do things like send a photo of a sign in a foreign language and ask for translation, or send an audio clip from your toddler’s latest philosophical ramblings to ask for text transcription. It’s not as powerful as the standard portal, yet it’s close. The phone number 1-800-CHATGPT is still functional, but it can only accept audio input. ChatGPT has been available on WhatsApp since December. However, some users may have been frustrated by the keyboard. They will love being able to send a voice note or a quick picture to ChatGPT to get its help. Accepting voice messages and pictures within an app many people use every day makes it easier for spontaneous interactions. It’s like sending a random photo or voice recording to a buddy when you think of it.

Imagine you’re on a run when you suddenly remember an important idea. You can send a voice note to ChatGPT and ask it to summarize your ideas into a short note. You can also take a picture of the problem and ask ChatGPT for troubleshooting advice.

ChatGPT remembers your preferences

This update also introduces account linkage. The AI will remember your preferences and previous interactions if you already have a ChatGPT Account through the app or website, whether you are on the free tier of ChatGPT or a paid subscription to ChatGPT Pro or Plus. The previous limitations, like the 15-minute limit per month on AI calls, will be loosened. This update may entice those who have liked the idea of ChatGPT, but were reluctant to download the application or visit the website. OpenAI may be attempting to lure WhatsApp users who don’t have ChatGPT accounts by adding more ChatGPT functionality within WhatsApp and eliminating the need to open another app or switch contexts. ChatGPT is now integrated into the place where users already text their family and friends, so they don’t need to open it separately. Why not also have an AI assistant?

OpenAI mentions that messages can be reviewed for security purposes. Users should keep this in mind before sending any sensitive or personal information. ChatGPT is now more integrated than ever for everyday tasks like brainstorming and answering random questions.

It remains to be seen if WhatsApp users will start contacting ChatGPT when they have a random thought like “What’s for Dinner?” or “Can You turn my 2AM voice ramblings in to something coherent?”

Here’s what you can expect from the next version of WhatsApp.
