Anki Vector Robot gets an OpenAI ChatGPT Upgrade

Anki launched its Vector robot in 2018. As a companion robotic, it offered some pretty revolutionary features at the time, including mobile app control and voice control, facial detection, and more.

Anki is now promoting a upcoming Beta software version for Vector, which will see a new integration of today’s innovations, LLMs. Anki has selected ChatGPT to be the vector for modern AI in Vector. This will allow the small AI-powered robot to hear and respond in plain English.

OpenAI’s language-model will allow Vector’s conversational capabilities to grow significantly. Here is my original review on Vector from December 2018.

Vector is smart. He monitors his own charge level and, when it runs low, will automatically roll to his charger.

Vector is also Alexa enabled and can interact with your home IoT devices. With a simple voice command, you can turn on your TV or turn off your lights (via IFTTT).

This shows the power of a robot, and while most voice assistants are smart speakers, Vector is different as he can move around the house. Anki has confirmed that the robot will soon be multi-lingual and allow input/output in different languages. This will be welcomed news for many Australians, as Australia is a multicultural country and many people speak English as a secondary language.
