Airtel Nigeria has increased its voice and internet prices by 50%, one week after MTN Nigeria.
The Airtel’s new cheapest monthly data plan costs N1,500 instead of the previous N1,000 1.2GB plan.
There are also other changes, such as 3GB for only N2,000 (up to 1.5GB at just N1,200), 4GB at just N2,500 (previously at 3GB at just N1,500), and even 8GB at only N3,000 (up to 4.5GB at a mere N2,000). The price of larger plans has also been adjusted. 10GB costs N4,000 (previously N2,500 for 6GB), 13GB costs N5,000 (up to N3,000 for 10GB), 18GB costs N6,000 (previously N4,000 for 15GB), and 25GB is N8,000 (replacing N5,000 for the 18GB plan).
This adjustment is part of a larger trend by telcos to review prices after the Nigerian Communications Commission approved a 50% increase in tariffs on January 20, 2025. MTN Nigeria was the first to implement the increase. The telco received public backlash when it adjusted three of its data packages by more than 50 percent. MTN Nigeria initially claimed that its hike was not above the NCC-approved targets and was simply removing subsidies from their special plans. However, the company issued an apology to its subscribers. According to a representative of Airtel Nigeria who spoke with TechCabal, the company implemented a flat rate of 25 kobo per second for calls.
A one-minute call cost N15, up from N11. The increase in tariff was not reflected on many of the weekly and daily plans. Subscribers can buy the 5GB plan that lasts for one week for N1,500. Airtel Unlimited plans such as N20,000 for 200GB over 30 days plus 10GB per day after exhausting main data and N30,000 for $300GB over 30 days are also still available.
