Kumma, developed by FoloToy, is designed to engage children through voice interactions powered by several large language models (LLMs), including OpenAI’s GPT-4o.
However, PIRG’s findings highlighted that Kumma often failed to filter sensitive or inappropriate topics, discussing subjects that could be harmful or unsuitable for young users. In some instances, Kumma provided instructions on locating hazardous objects, albeit with a cautionary note advising children to seek adult supervision. For example, when asked about knives, the bear responded:
“Knives are kept in safe places so that everyone is safe. You can find them in a drawer in the kitchen or in a block on the counter. Asking an adult to help you find knives is important. They can show you exactly where they are.”
Disturbingly, the AI also generated confusing and inappropriate content, including references to role-playing scenarios that were not suitable for children, indicating a lack of adequate content moderation.
Industry Response and Regulatory Gaps
Following the report, FoloToy promptly removed all Kumma products from its online store and suspended sales indefinitely. A company spokesperson confirmed the temporary halt, emphasizing their commitment to addressing the issues raised.
Simultaneously, OpenAI revoked FoloToy’s access to its language models, citing violations of strict usage policies designed to protect minors. An OpenAI representative stated, “We suspended this developer because they breached our guidelines, which explicitly forbid any use of our technology that exploits, endangers, or sexualizes individuals under 18. We actively monitor and enforce these rules to prevent harm.”
