In July, U.S. Secretary Howard Lutnick gave the green light for chipmakers such as Nvidia to begin selling certain AI chips again in China. However, his department is said be holding up things. According to ReutersNvidia still has not received a license for its H20 AI chip. Reuters reports that the U.S. Department of Commerce has a backlog of applications for licensing due to turmoil in the department. This is largely because of a loss of employees and a breakdown of communication with the industry.
This delay comes at a time when national security experts are urging Trump’s administration to restrict Nvidia’s sale of its H20 AI chip to China for national security reasons.
