Facebook test uses Meta AI for photos you haven’t uploaded

Facebook is showing some users a message asking if they would like to allow the social media to create collages and AI restylings based on photos they have yet to upload. According toTechCrunchFacebook shows users the message whenever they upload a Story to the app. We were unable to reproduce the event, so it doesn’t appear for everyone. In the notification, Meta stated that it would upload media from users’ camera rolls to the company’s server to help them create ideas. “on an ongoing basis, based on info like time, location and themes.”

It also stated that the media wouldn’t be used to target ads, but the wording raised concern about Meta using camera roll files for artificial intelligence training. Meta assuredThe Verge that it is not “currently training [its] AI models with these photos.” The Verge’s comms director, Maria Cubeta told the publication that Meta was “testing suggestions of ready-to-share and curated content from a person’s camera roll” part of its efforts to explore ways to improve content sharing. She said “These suggestions are opt-in only and only shown to you — unless you decide to share them — and can be turned off at any time. Camera roll media may be used to improve these suggestions, but are not used to improve AI models in this test,” .

Although the test feature is limited, it has been running for some time. Some users reported seeing it in earlier this year. Facebook has a page of help that explains how to allow or disallow “creative ideas with camera roll cloud processing” in Facebook. For those who clicked Allow on the message, they can go into Settings and turn it off under the Preferences section “Camera roll sharing suggestions” .
