RWE Bets on HPE Private Cloud AI to push green energy

The renewable energy supplier RWE uses HPE’s AI and private cloud technologies to better predict energy supply and demand.

German multinational RWE is one of the UK’s leading developers of renewable energy. It operates a mix wind, hydro, and biomass generation sites that can power around 12 million homes.

To improve its ability to analyze and model weather data, the company will deploy HPE Private Cloud AI Infrastructure, which is a pre-tested, scalable stack equipped with Nvidia AI compute capabilities. HPE said that the HPE GreenLake cloud features will help the RWE team to manage and observe the environment with ease, automate workflows, and orchestrate data, endpoints and workloads, including sustainability metrics. HPE says the setup is a on-premise offering, which will allow RWE researchers to scale quickly in line with their computing demands across the various geographies that the company operates. This programme is designed to accelerate energy transition and decarbonisation in the countries where the company operates. These include Germany, the US, and the UK.

RWE has set a goal to become a net-zero company by 2040, and “weather modelling” is a priority in that process.

The ability to fine-tune AI-driven weather model will be a key enabling technology to unlock higher efficiencies and give RWE a competitive advantage on the market, said Fidelma Russell, HPE’s chief technology officer and executive vice president and general manager for hybrid clouds.
