The Meta AI application could soon have a paid tier similar to those offered by competitors like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, described the plan on Wednesday during an earnings call for Q1 2025. He said that there was a chance to offer a premium service to people who wanted to unlock more computing power or additional functionality in Meta AI.

In an effort to compete with ChatGPT the company launched the standalone Meta AI app last week. It allows you to interact directly with the chatbot, and create images within the app. Meta claims that the chatbot has now been used by nearly 1 billion people. It was previously only available in apps such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot all offer subscriptions that allow users to access more advanced features and computation. Meta reported $42 billion in revenue over the last few months, and revealed that they now expect to invest up $72 billion in AI instead of the $65 billion Zuckerberg had previously announced.

Zuckerberg also mentioned incorporating “product suggestions or ads” into Meta AI. It’s unclear when ads or a paid-tier might be released. Zuckerberg stated, “I expect we’ll be largely focused… on scaling and deepening our engagement for at least the next one year before we will really be ready to build out the business.”
