China’s top internet regulator gave the green light to 346 AI services that generate new data under a national registration scheme designed to regulate this fast-growing industry. Cyberspace Administration of China announced on Monday that it had registered hundreds of generative AI apps by the end of the month. This was part of its ongoing efforts to ensure AI developments align with the country’s policies and security standards. The initiative comes after the implementation of the government’s Interim Measures for Management of Generative AI Services (19459029) which will come into effect in August of 2023.

According to the rules, companies that offer generative AI products that could have a public opinion or mobilization effect must undergo security assessments and submit their algorithms to the authorities. Applications must also clearly disclose the underlying AI models or registration numbers or online identifiers on a prominent page within an app or product description.[Xinhua[Xinhuain Chinese]
