Customers from multiple banks have reported difficulties accessing online banking services for the second consecutive month. The problems occurred two days before MPs were to be informed of the IT failures that have affected banks in the past two-year period.

Barclays Bank customers were unable to access online and app banking services at the end of January due to a major IT failure that lasted for three days.

According to outage, the latest problems, again on payday, hit Lloyds Bank Nationwide TSB and Halifax. monitoring organisation Downdetector.

A senior banking IT professional who requested anonymity said that if several banks are experiencing problems at the same moment, it could be a related factor. “If there are many banks, I think that they may be using software or a supplier that is shared by several banks. It would not be coincidental if all of them went down at the same time,” he said.

He added that, in his experience, banks tend to avoid IT changes at the end the month. He said that banks tend to avoid making changes at the end of the month. “For example, the finance departments within the banks don’t like the risk that chaos will occur at an unprecedented end-of-month because they are month-end accounting, and they don’t want to have technology problems.” The problems are occurring just days after the Treasury Committee MPs set a deadline for UK bank chiefs to provide data on the impact and scale of IT failures in the past two-year period. MPs asked Barclays about the cause of the latest outage, how it affected the customers and how the bank planned to prevent a similar failure from occurring again.

Eight other bank bosses have been asked to give an overview of how many times and for how long services were unavailable to customers over the last two years due to IT failure. They also had to describe the reasons behind the failures. You can Read the letters to the CEOs of the banks here

After the Barclay’s issues, Treasury Committee Chair Meg Hillier, M.P. said: “When a banking’s IT system fails, it can be an issue for our constituents who rely on certain services to buy food or pay their bills. It’s either bad luck or bad plan that it happened at a major Bank like Barclays during a critical time of the year. It’s important to know what happened and what is being done about it.”

According to her, the closure of high-street branches in favor of online banking has made bank crashes more painful for customers. Hillier said that the rapidly decreasing number of high-street bank branches makes IT outages more painful.
