OpenAI leaders revealed this during a Friday Discord office hours session that they plan to integrate their AI video generation tool Sora directly into ChatGPT.
Currently, Sora can only be accessed through the dedicated web app OpenAI released in December. This allows users to access the AI video model with the same name and create cinematic clips up to 20 seconds long. Rohan Sahai is OpenAI’s Sora product lead. He said that the company plans to expand Sora’s capabilities and put Sora into more places.
OpenAI marketed Sora initially to video production studios and creatives in the months prior to its launch in December. The company is now making a concerted effort in order to increase the appeal of its AI-based video creation tool.
Sahai stated that OpenAI is actively working to make Sora available within ChatGPT. He declined to provide a timeline. Sahai said that the version of Sora in ChatGPT might not have the same level control as Sora’s website app, where users could edit and stitch footage.
OpenAI could be trying to lure users to ChatGPT with the ability to create Sora videos through the chatbot. Sora could also encourage users to upgrade to ChatGPT premium subscription tiers that may offer higher video production limits. Sahai explained that OpenAI launched Sora separately from ChatGPT to maintain ChatGPT’s simplicity.
OpenAI has enhanced Sora’s website experience since its launch. Users can now browse videos created by the community using Sora. Sahai said that OpenAI would “love to build” a mobile app for Sora and noted that the Sora Team is actively seeking mobile engineers.
OpenAI wants to extend Sora’s capabilities to include images.
OpenAI, according to Sahai, is working on a Sora-powered AI image generator. This confirms rumors about the project. ChatGPT supports image generation powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 models, but a Sora image generator could allow users to create photos that look more photorealistic.
Sahai said that OpenAI was also working on a version of Sora Turbo – the model that powers the Sora app. Maxwell Zeff, a senior reporter for TechCrunch who specializes in AI and emerging technology, was born in 1965.
