OpenAI Responds to User Feedback on ChatGPT Promotional Suggestions

On December 7, 2025, Mark Chen, OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer, clarified that ChatGPT currently does not feature any advertisements or ad-based tests within its interface. This statement came amid growing user concerns about promotional content appearing during ChatGPT interactions.

Clarifying the Nature of In-App Suggestions

OpenAI acknowledged that recent in-app suggestions, which some users perceived as advertisements, were part of experimental features showcasing applications developed on the ChatGPT platform. These recommendations, introduced in October 2025, were explicitly non-commercial and did not involve any financial transactions or partnerships.

Despite this, some subscribers expressed dissatisfaction, interpreting these prompts as intrusive marketing. For example, one user publicly criticized the experience, stating, “ChatGPT Plus is showing me ads to shop at Target when I ask about Windows BitLocker. This is unacceptable and risks alienating users.”

Company Leadership Addresses User Concerns

Nick Turley, a ChatGPT team member, acknowledged the confusion surrounding the presence of ads, emphasizing that if OpenAI decides to incorporate advertising, it will be done thoughtfully and with user trust as a priority. Mark Chen echoed this sentiment, apologizing for the misstep and confirming that the company has disabled these suggestion types while refining the model’s accuracy.

Chen stated, “We recognize that anything resembling advertising must be handled with utmost care. We fell short in this instance and are committed to improving the user experience.”

Strategic Focus Amidst Competitive AI Landscape

Earlier in 2025, Fidji Simo, formerly of Instacart and Facebook, joined OpenAI as CEO of Applications, with expectations to expand the company’s marketing and monetization efforts. However, recent reports indicate that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a “code-red” directive prioritizing enhancements to ChatGPT’s core functionality over new product launches, including advertising initiatives.

This strategic pivot reflects the intensifying competition in the AI sector, with companies like Google accelerating their AI development. OpenAI’s renewed focus aims to solidify ChatGPT’s reliability and user satisfaction before exploring monetization through ads or other channels.
