OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities by launching group chat functionality, enabling up to 20 participants to engage simultaneously in a shared conversation with the AI. After a brief testing phase earlier this month, this feature is now accessible to all users who are signed in, transforming ChatGPT from a primarily individual assistant into a collaborative tool for small teams.
Introducing Collaborative Conversations in ChatGPT
This new group chat option is designed to facilitate everyday coordination among friends, family, or colleagues-whether it’s organizing a dinner, planning a trip, or co-creating an outline. Beyond casual use, it holds significant promise for professional environments where teams rely on ChatGPT for brainstorming, research, and initial project discussions.
Getting Started with Group Chats
To initiate a group chat, users tap the “people” icon located at the top-right corner of the ChatGPT interface. This action duplicates the current conversation into a new shared space, where others can be invited via a link. This invitation link is shareable, allowing the group to organically grow as needed.
Upon joining or creating a group chat for the first time, participants are prompted to set a display name, username, and profile picture to help identify contributors within the conversation. OpenAI has trained ChatGPT to intuitively gauge when to interject or remain silent, maintaining a natural flow. Users can directly summon the AI’s input by mentioning “ChatGPT” in their messages. Additionally, the AI can respond with emojis and incorporate profile images when generating personalized visuals.
A control panel in the upper-right corner offers options to add or remove members, mute notifications, and provide tailored instructions to ChatGPT. Importantly, OpenAI clarifies that ChatGPT does not carry over memories from private chats into group discussions, nor does it form new memories based on group interactions.
Group chats operate on the GPT-5.1 Auto model, which dynamically selects the best response engine depending on the prompt and user settings. Rate limits apply only when ChatGPT sends messages. This rollout follows the recent introduction of GPT-5.1 Instant and Thinking models, alongside the launch of Sora, a social platform for short video creation.
Enhancing Teamwork Through Group Chats
While the feature is marketed for casual coordination, it addresses common workplace challenges related to idea sharing, draft reviews, and role-based collaboration. By centralizing communication with ChatGPT integrated, group chats can streamline team workflows.
Bridging Cross-Department Collaboration
In large organizations, aligning product, design, engineering, and marketing teams at project inception is often complicated by fragmented communication across emails and messaging apps. Group chats provide a unified forum where all stakeholders can contribute. If someone joins late, ChatGPT can quickly summarize prior discussions, highlight unresolved issues, and help convert notes into actionable plans-facilitating smoother transitions from brainstorming to execution.
Accelerating Review Processes
Traditional review cycles can be lengthy and disorganized, with feedback scattered across multiple platforms and versions. Within a group chat, teams can collaboratively review drafts in real time. ChatGPT assists by rewriting sections, comparing alternatives, and clarifying feedback, which can significantly reduce turnaround times, especially under tight deadlines or frequent revisions.
Streamlining Onboarding for New Members
New hires often face steep learning curves when joining ongoing projects, needing to sift through extensive past communications and documents. Adding them to an existing group chat allows ChatGPT to generate concise summaries of previous conversations, spotlight key decisions, and outline outstanding tasks-cutting down onboarding time and improving integration.
Facilitating Task Coordination
Routine activities such as organizing workshops, drafting client communications, or event planning can be bogged down by prolonged back-and-forth messaging. Group chats enable participants to request ChatGPT’s help in creating schedules, refining messages, building checklists, or evaluating options. The group can then collaboratively fine-tune these outputs, avoiding repetitive work.
Organizing and Synthesizing Creative Feedback
Creative projects often stall due to scattered or conflicting feedback from various sources. Group chats consolidate all input in one place, where ChatGPT can categorize comments by theme, identify contradictions, and draft responses that reflect the team’s consensus. This approach minimizes rework and guides the group toward unified creative decisions.
Transforming Team Dynamics with AI Integration
The launch of group chats coincides with a growing trend of embedding AI deeper into organizational workflows. ChatGPT already supports many users in drafting, summarizing, and editing content. By providing a shared conversational space, this feature could reshape how teams conduct early-stage discussions, particularly in companies experimenting with AI-enhanced planning and review processes.
While it doesn’t replace the need for human coordination, group chats offer a centralized platform where team members can communicate directly and involve ChatGPT as a collaborative partner. For teams grappling with dispersed inputs, slow feedback loops, or frequent context switching, this innovation promises a more efficient way to keep projects progressing smoothly.
